In his book On Walden Pond, Henry David Thoreau wrote, “The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation and go to the grave with the song still in them.” Despite his having espoused the virtue of “living deliberately,” and learning to “reawaken and keep ourselves awake, not by mechanical aids, but by an infinite expectation of the dawn, which does not forsake us in our soundest sleep,” so many people continue to live that quiet life of desperation.

Holiday Job Hunting Boot Camp

The top seven myths about job hunting:

1. It’s a waste of time to look for a job between Thanksgiving and New Years!
2. If a company isn’t hiring or a job is not posted there is no job.
3. The Internet is the best place to get an interview/job.
4. The most qualified job seekers get the best jobs.
5. It’s not what you know but “who you know.”
6. Lowering your salary will get you a job.
7. Qualified job seekers should not have to sell themselves.

Are you looking for a job? Are you looking for a better job? Are you afraid you may need to look for a job soon? Here’s a secret. The holiday season is actually a good time to look for a job. First, there is less competition because other folks give up during the holiday. Many hiring budgets become available in January. If you are not on the playing field by then, you are not in the game.

Beginning the first 2 weeks of Dec. intensive three-week Holiday Job Hunting Boot Camps are forming—open to a maximum of eight participants each. Each week includes one hour-long tele-class, one hour-long tele-networking group session, and 30 minutes of individual consulting. Cost: $297. That’s about what you’d pay for an interview suit and a haircut—assuming, you get the interview.

Week One: Your Plan
Learn the rules of the game and make a plan to win. Learn the top seven job-hunting mistakes and how to avoid them. Get clear on the kind of job you want and where you want to look. Drive the process; don’t let the process drive you. Begin to learn about what hiring managers want in a resume.

Week Two: Your Resume
Learn how to write killer resumes—that’s right, resume with an “s”, you cannot get away with one generic resume. Custom resumes are price of entry. I’ll teach you the tricks of quickly creating custom resumes that actually get read.

Week Three: Your Network
More than 80% of all jobs are filled by word-of-mouth. The percentage of jobs posted is less than 30%. Think of your network as your personal agents. Learn how to optimize your network—who they are, how to reach them, and what to say. Not only will you learn to enjoy networking, but you also will leave my boot camp with a new network of well-trained fellow net-workers.
